The idea of establishing a casino in Monte-Carlo was conceived in the mid-19th century, during a period marked by economic hardship for the Grimaldi family. Prince Charles III envisioned a project that could generate significant revenue for Monaco’s coffers while also providing an attractive destination for tourists and locals alike.
On August 14, 1863, the Casino de Monte-Carlo officially opened its doors to the public in the Salle des États of the Saint-Antoine Chapel. Initially, this casino was built as a simple entertainment venue with various games of chance available, including baccarat, roulette, and faro.
Development and Expansion
Between 1864 and 1878, under Prince Charles III’s leadership, significant improvements were made to the establishment, transforming it into what we know today. Architects Dufournier and Châteaubrun oversaw extensive renovations, including adding new rooms for various games of chance.
Notably, Casino de Monte-Carlo adopted the concept of separate gaming areas – a system still used today. Each area was dedicated to specific types of games or events, providing customers with an organized experience and enhanced security measures.
